We recently helped a client retire a couple of years earlier than she thought possible. She’s a nurse who spent an incredible 43 years caring for patients—day in and day out.
During one of our conversations, she reflected on her long career with a mix of pride and frustration. One comment in particular stood out:
“I never won an award—not once in 43 years.”
But she didn’t say this with regret. In fact, she said it with pride.
Why? Because in her experience, awards weren’t handed out for excellent patient care or tireless dedication. They were more often reserved for those who played the politics—attending meetings, navigating bureaucracy, and speaking the right language in the right rooms.
Meanwhile, the real work of healthcare—the hard, human work—was happening quietly in patient rooms, hospital corridors, and overnight shifts. And it was being done by people like her.
Doing the Work Doesn’t Always Get the Recognition
Her story echoes what we hear all the time from the thousands of nurses we’ve worked with over the years. There’s a common frustration growing among experienced caregivers:
- The executive ranks keep expanding, while those leaders become more and more disconnected from the realities of patient care.
- Policies are made without listening to the people doing the actual work.
- Nurses feel disrespected and unappreciated, even as they carry the weight of an increasingly strained system.
- And perhaps most troubling—we’re losing our most experienced caregivers at a time when we need them most.
Who pays the price?
We all do. As potential patients of a healthcare system that values meetings over medicine, and politics over people.
Recognition Is Nice—But Retirement Is Better
We didn’t help this nurse win an award. We helped her retire with confidence, security, and dignity—on her terms.
We helped her claim back time, after decades of giving her time to others.
This is what Quality of Life Planning® is all about:
Aligning your financial life with your real-life values—not just your job title, your resume, or whether someone in an office ever said “thank you.”
We Believe Nurses Deserve Recognition
That’s why we created the Quality of Life Nurse Award. It’s our way of celebrating nurses who show extraordinary commitment to their patients and their profession—often without fanfare or formal recognition.
If you know a nurse who embodies the spirit of compassion, service, and quiet excellence, we’d love to hear their story.
