The Nurse Who Never Won an Award—And Why That Says Everything

A powerful story about a dedicated nurse, a well-earned retirement, and why real recognition goes beyond plaques and praise.

We recently helped a client retire a couple of years earlier than she thought possible. She’s a nurse who spent an incredible 43 years caring for patients—day in and day out.

During one of our conversations, she reflected on her long career with a mix of pride and frustration. One comment in particular stood out:

“I never won an award—not once in 43 years.”

But she didn’t say this with regret. In fact, she said it with pride.

Why? Because in her experience, awards weren’t handed out for excellent patient care or tireless dedication. They were more often reserved for those who played the politics—attending meetings, navigating bureaucracy, and speaking the right language in the right rooms.

Meanwhile, the real work of healthcare—the hard, human work—was happening quietly in patient rooms, hospital corridors, and overnight shifts. And it was being done by people like her.

Doing the Work Doesn’t Always Get the Recognition
